Our Story

In 1994 I was blessed with a beautiful son, Rayne, I had no idea how the birth of this amazing child would change my life forever. Two years later he was diagnosed with autism, and so began the journey of a lifetime. A journey that has taken me on a road I wasn't prepared for. In the years that followed I quickly learned "the system" and how things were run. There were times when things seemed reasonable, but there were also times when policies and programs seemed to hurt the child more than benefit him. I met other parents who spoke of their troubles accessing "the system", and saw first hand their frustrations and felt their helplessness.

While my son was in the first grade he made an incredible connection with one of his instructional assistants, who's name was Julie. It was a connection that was easy to see and one that was very exciting for me, as a parent of a child with special needs. As the year went on I got to know Julie more and was amazed at the insight and love she had for my son, and at the ease in which they seemed to work together. She was not only good for my son, but she was good for me. She saw the value of a parents voice, she encouraged, embraced and included "my visions" for my child. She empowered me every chance she had and taught me that parents are always at choice.

As the years passed, Julie and I developed not only an amazing friendship but a desire to advocate for families of children with special needs. To teach parents that they are their childs best advocates, and that they can make positive changes in their childs education.

Thus Bridges Advocacy and Outreach Center was born. We have a vision that provides choices, value and empowerment. And one that encourages parents to let their voices be heard, to join together and to change policies that dont stand for whats best for our children. If you or someone you know has a child with special needs, please contact us. Join with us to promote positive changes in the lives of those with special needs.

Sincerely,
LeeAnn MacDonald
